Our fifth struggle is against the demon of dejection, who obscures the soul’s capacity for spiritual contemplation and keeps it from all good works. When this malicious demon seizes our soul and darkens it completely, he prevents us from praying gladly, from reading Holy Scripture with profit and perseverance, and from being gentle and
compassionate towards our brethren. He instills a hatred of every kind of work and even of the monastic profession itself. Undermining all the soul’s salutary resolutions, weakening its persistence and constancy, he leaves it senseless and paralyzed, tied and bound by its despairing thoughts. Φοβερότατος αυτός ο αγώνας και από όλους τους προηγούμενους αγριότερος. Αυτός πολεμά προπάντων τους τέλειους και προσπαθεί να καταστρέφει εκείνους που ανέβηκαν σχεδόν στην κορυφή των αρετών. Και όπως μια κολλητική και θανατηφόρα αρρώστια δεν καταστρέφει ένα μέλος του σώματος, αλλά ολόκληρο το σώμα, έτσι και η υπερηφάνεια όχι μόνον ένα μέρος της ψυχής, αλλά ολόκληρη την καταστρέφει. Και το καθένα από τα άλλα πάθη, αν και ταράζει την ψυχή, αλλά με το να πολεμά μια μόνο αρετή, εκείνη που είναι

Φιλοκαλία των Ιερών Νηπτικών – Άγιος Κασσιανός ο Ρωμαίος – Περί της κενοδοξίας
Αυτό το πάθος είναι πολύμορφο και πολύ λεπτό και δεν το εννοεί γρήγορα ούτε εκείνος που πειράζεται από αυτό. Επειδή οι προσβολές των άλλων παθών είναι πιο φανερές και ευκολότερα καταπολεμούνται, καθώς η ψυχή αναγνωρίζει τον εχθρό και με την αντίρρηση στις προσβολές του και την προσευχή, αμέσως τον ανατρέπει.
