Η ανάλυση γενετικού υλικού από έναν τάφο Βίκινγκ των μέσων του 10ου αιώνα μ.Χ. επιβεβαιώνει για πρώτη φορά ότι –μερικές τουλάχιστον– γυναίκες πολεμούσαν δίπλα δίπλα στην πρώτη γραμμή με τους άνδρες, καθώς το DNA έδειξε ότι ο θαμμένος πολεμιστής ήταν στην πραγματικότητα πολεμίστρια και μάλιστα, όπως φαίνεται, υψηλού βαθμού στην πολεμική ιεραρχία.
