Important finds from prehistoric Akrotiri, Thera

Important new data has come to light during the ongoing excavation works at Akrotiri, Thera conducted under the auspices of the Archaeological Society  at Athens, headed by Professor Emeritus Mr. Christos Doumas and funded by the Kaspesky Lab. Inside an important, most probably public building, known as the “House of Benches,” where in 1999 the famous golden ibex had been found inside a clay larnax next to a pile of animals’ horns, amphoras were found this year under the destruction backfills in chronological order, together with small rectangular clay larnakes. Rich finds at Vryokastro and Vryokastraki on Kythnos

Results were particularly impressive from this year’s systematic excavation of the ancient town of Kythnos (today’s Vryokastro) conducted from June 26 to August 4. Standing out among them are the finds from systematic excavations in the area of the ancient harbour, on the islet of “Vryokastraki” (the small island at the tip of the peninsular that, till Late Antiquity at least, must have been joined to the coast by a small isthmus). Clay tablet found in the area near Olympia

During the surface geoarchaeological survey, in the framework of the 3-year research programme entitled “The multidimensional space of Olympia”, conducted at sites around the sanctuary, under the direction of Dr. Erofili-Iris Kolia, director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia in collaboration with professors Franziska Lang, Birgitta Eder, Andreas Vött and Hans-Joachim Gehrke of the German Archaeological Institute and the universities of Darmstadt, Tübingen and Frankfurt am Mainz, a particularly important find has been located and retrieved. In Greece there is a unique in its kind Laboratory in whole Europe

In the courtyard of the traditional building in Kalamata (the capital of South/East Peloponnese) where the Department of History, Archeology and Cultural  Resources Management of the University of Peloponnese is set since 2003, Greek students enjoy the  sunshine  sitting together with colleagues from the U.S., Slovenia and Turkey who have moved in Kalamata in order to attend in English language the Master’s program “CultTech” (Cultural Heritage Materials and Technologies), while a Canadian has already graduated and  returned to his homeland.
