Trepanation (primitive Neurosurgery) in the Ancient Greek world
In this article we present a summary of official (published) information on trepanation in the Ancient Greek world. The word trepanation comes from the Greek word trypanon (τρύπανον) meaning trepan, or borer. It refers to the surgical procedure of creating an opening in the skull. Trephination is a more recent word and specifically refers to an opening made by a circular saw (trephine), but both terms are used interchangeably in the literature.
