It’s both the bane of many parents and what has been called a major national vulnerability: the inability of many children to understand mathematics. Understanding that problem and developing strategies to overcome it is the research focus of Nicole McNeil, Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame, and the researchers in her lab. Continue reading “Study shows how students understand mathematics”
Depression speeds up brain aging, find psychologists
Psychologists at the University of Sussex have found a link between depression and an acceleration of the rate at which the brain ages. Although scientists have previously reported that people with depression or anxiety have an increased risk of dementia in later life, this is the first study that provides comprehensive evidence for the effect of depression on decline in overall cognitive function (also referred to as cognitive state), in a general population. How Perceptive Are You? Not Everyone Is the Same
Our abilities to see things that appear fleetingly or in cluttered environments or outside our focus of attention are all determined by a single perceptual capacity trait that varies among people, a new study suggests. Researchers say these findings could one day help scientifically predict an individual’s performance in jobs that rely on strong observational skills. Continue reading “How Perceptive Are You? Not Everyone Is the Same”
Psychiatric disorders share an underlying genetic basis
Psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder often run in families. In a new international collaboration, researchers explored the genetic connections between these and other disorders of the brain at a scale that far eclipses previous work on the subject. The team determined that psychiatric disorders share many genetic variants, while neurological disorders (such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s) appear more distinct. Continue reading “Psychiatric disorders share an underlying genetic basis”
Brain mechanism involved in language learning
Learning a new language may be more of a science than an art, a University of Sussex study finds. Continue reading “Brain mechanism involved in language learning”
